Intimate Partner Violence: Break the Cycle

Intimate Partner Violence: Break the Cycle

Throughout the month of October, we have brought awareness to the public health issue of intimate partner violence (IPV). Most victims of IPV fall into a cycle of abuse, which can make it challenging to seek help or leave the situation. The basic parts of an IPV cycle see an abuser threaten violence, strike their victim, apologize, and promise to change, before starting the cycle all over again. The constant apologies and remorse from the abuser are one of the reasons why it is so hard to sever the relationship. The victim will start rationalizing their behavior and believe that they will not harm them again, only to be proven wrong. The longer the relationship continues, the more dangerous it can become. The victim will then be fearful to seek refuge or support.

Knowing where or who you can turn to is the first step in breaking the cycle of IPV. Often the most dangerous time is when the victim is trying to leave the situation, so having support is vital during this stage. The New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NYSCADV) houses a directory of community support services divided into counties in NY. If you do not see your county in which you reside in, please follow this link:
